This month we’re taking a look at what you might have heard about collagen – and separating fact from fiction! Read on to find out how you can get the most out of our Marine Collagen Supplements.
1. Don’t add your collagen to a hot drink!
Chucking collagen powder into hot drinks might seem like the way to go, but don’t fall for it! Collagen actually falls apart at hot temperatures, meaning that in a hot drink, the molecular structure of collagen will melt. This will hugely diminish the health benefits that collagen can provide, making the whole thing a bit of a waste! Our supplements can be mixed into a cold drink or taken with food – but they also have the divine natural flavour of NZ blackcurrants, so they won’t leave a bad taste in your mouth!
2. Wondering when to take your collagen?
Timing for collagen supplements depends on why you’re taking them. But, we have a couple of tips to help.
To truly reap the sleep benefits of marine collagen, take it in the evening. Collagen is rich in the amino acid glycine, which has huge benefits for sleep duration and quality. Glycine calms the central nervous system and lowers the body temperature, helping you to get to sleep. On a side note, glycine is also great for boosting your mood. It increases serotonin levels without increasing dopamine levels, leading to better sleep.
If you’re suffering from joint, tendon or ligament pain, it’s best to take collagen 1 or 2 hours before exercising. The exercise you do will help the collagen peptides to reach your joints and tendons. This can help to make the joints stronger and more resilient to injury. In addition, the rich vitamin C content in our Seaweed Supplements is known to stimulate collagen synthesis, so the two can form a great duo to help with injury recovery.
3. Know where your supplements came from.
We make sure all of our supplements are sustainably-sourced and batch tested. Unlike most other collagen brands on the market, our products are all sourced and tested right here in NZ. It’s so important to know exactly what you’re putting into your body and where it’s from, plus it's great to support local business! If you’re currently taking another brand of collagen, make sure you do your own research into their sourcing and testing processes. Plus, we love Marine Collagen as opposed to bovine or porcine, as it’s the most sustainable type to use.
4. Are supplements really necessary?
This is different for everyone, and we recommend doing your own research! Our blog posts might be a good place to start. However, collagen can be helpful at any age, especially given that the body produces less and lower quality collagen every year. Because of this, supplements are a great way to provide the body with the collagen it needs. You also don’t need to be suffering from any particular health condition - anyone can reap the benefits of collagen. The effects of ageing aren’t really seen until later in life, but taking collagen early on can help to keep the skin, hair, nails and joints healthy and delay these signs of ageing.
